Pre-conference training

As in previous years, we will offer training sessions prior to the "East meets West" forum on Wednesday, 5 April 2017.

In addition, the Patent Documentation Group (PDG) will again host a pre-conference workshop offering an informal exchange between European industry representatives and Asian patent offices delegates.

All optional activities will take place at the EPO's sub-office in Vienna, Rennweg 12, 1030 Vienna, Austria. (Please note that spaces in all these additional activities are limited).

Searching Asian non-patent literature
Trainers: Christine Kämmer, Jürgen Mühl (EPO)

This course provides you with an overview of sources to retrieve non-patent literature (NPL) from Japan, China and Korea. There is a high number of commercial NPL platforms available in Asian languages. However, this presentation will focus on a selection of well-known (public) sources that are mostly searchable via English language interfaces and are - at least partially -  accessible free of charge.

Patent information from the BRICS countries
Trainers: Jutta Haußer, Eva Straková (EPO)

This session will cover basic information on the patent systems in the BRICS countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Participants will get a first overview on how to understand patent documentation from each of these jurisdictions, along with special features of the granting procedures. Useful tips and practical exercises on how to locate patent information in public online sources will also be provided.

What the user community needs - towards effective collaboration between East and West
Chairman: Peter Kallas (BASF)

At the 2009 "East meets West" forum in Vienna, the PDG (Patent Documentation Group) met representatives of Asian patent offices and their related organisations to discuss closer cooperation between industry users and the Asian patent offices. In 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 this fruitful dialogue was continued. This meeting has now established itself as a focal point for discussing user requirements pertaining to Asian patent information.

This year, PDG representatives will meet again with representatives from Asian patent offices to continue this informal exchange. The workshop will look at progress made since the last meeting in 2016. It will review recent developments in Asian patent information and their impact on patent information users. The aim of this ongoing dialogue between the user community and experts from Asian patent offices is to identify areas that still require improvements and to find a collaborative way of setting priorities for these.
