Inspec Analytics
Richard Simms, The IET (The Institution of Engineering and Technology)

Inspec Analytics is the next generation of our world-renowned Inspec resource.  By blending semantic technology with Inspec's core indexing competencies and 50 years of consistently structured scientific data, we have created a navigable map of science that combines new visualisation and query tools, taking researchers beyond the literature. Inspec Analytics provides the ability to dig deeper into the connected networks of scientific research, derive new insights and identify trends and patterns which were previously locked away. Inspec Analytics can help answer more complex questions such as:

  • What is the research output from my institution for a particular field?
  • What concepts are related to specific areas of expertise?
  • How has research within a given area changed over time?
  • How can I help my researchers find the best quality articles?
  • Who are the top institutions publishing on an area of science who we can collaborate with?
  • What are the top conferences and journals for a specific scientific field?
  • How I stay up to date on the latest hot topics and buzz-words related to a niche concept?

How could patent offices benefit from semantic AI-based search tools?
Linus Wretblad, IPscreener (AutoMatch Sweden AB)

Patent quality is set to be a challenge for both the innovation industry and the patent offices in the coming years. There is an exponential growth of information to explore for patent examiners and information professionals. It is a quest of finding a potential needle in an ever-growing haystack. This information overload pushes the decision-makers to pursue cost and time-efficient solutions for prior art searches. Recently, the revolution of automation via AI algorithms has been introduced in the patent domain.

The workshop will elaborate around best practice of using AI in the examination process and the future opportunities this change may bring to the patent information profession. Two main themes are:

  • How could this new technology be used to make the search and decision process more efficient for an examiner/searcher?
  • Could the use of automation support additional steps to enhance the overall search quality, e.g. classification that also assigns the best fit examiner?

Use of artificial intelligence and machine learning for patent searching and analytics.
Sumair Riyaz, Dolcera Corp

The seminar will cover the use of AI and machine learning to help create concise data sets and derive meaningful insights from these datasets.

We will learn how implementing of AI and deep learning algorithms will answer business questions rather than giving just unstructured patent information as a result set.

Artificial intelligence has helped improve the following operations in patent search and analytics process:

  • Create a comprehensive search strategy with precise keywords and class codes without spending hours on researching
  • Clean up patent and related data for better search and retrieval. Bibliographic data like assignees, legal status, reassignments, pruning trends etc. is standardised to help retrieve actionable insights
  • Give meaningful structure to technical disclosures from patents and to help map them to product and technology ontologies as we know it from business and market
  • Visualise multi-dimensional data points to get clear answers on questions that concern IP, R&D, product, innovation and market professionals
  • Report and share information securely for better and easy access

Creating an index of hit structures using BizInt Smart Charts for Patents
John Willmore, BizInt Solutions, Inc.

At the US PIUG Annual Meeting earlier this year, Maddy Marley from GSK presented the motivation for her team to work with BizInt to construct a structure-led report for her attorney clients.  In this seminar, we will show how to use BizInt Smart Charts for Patents to create reports from structure searches on Classic, STNext, and New STN, including creating a structure-oriented index to retrieved CAplus references from the results of a structure search in CAS REGISTRY on STNext. We will share several possible variations on this report, including showing how to fuse claims from full-text patent databases on STNext and value-added content from patent family databases on Patbase and Orbit with hit structure results from CAplus.

This seminar is for both current users of BizInt Smart Charts and for those interested in learning more about using BizInt Smart Charts with hit structures and patent family data.
