Procedure

“I didn’t want to be in a laboratory any more. The EPO offers something new and exciting.”

Cécile Denis, examiner for polymers, The Hague

The procedure to take part in a selection event is as follows:

  • Step 1: Application

Fill out the online application form. Receipt of your application will be confirmed by email.

  • Step 2: Online assessment exercises

If our basic requirements (nationality, level of education and language skills) are met, you will receive an e-mail inviting you to complete a number of online assessment exercises (e.g. cognitive ability, personality, languages).

Please note that all exercises must be completed within the given deadline to proceed with the selection process. If you fail to complete them, your application will not be considered further. We recommend you check your inbox as well as your spam folder regularly to make sure you do not miss any important emails from us.

  • Step 3: Skype interview

If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to participate in one or more Skype interviews.

  • Step 4: Selection event

If your Skype interview(s) is (are) successful, you will be invited to take part in a one- or two-day selection event in Munich or The Hague (depending on where you applied to work). The selection event will comprise one or more face-to-face interviews, supplemented as appropriate by additional technical, psychometric and/or language tests. You will also have the opportunity, through presentations and by meeting current EPO staff, to find out more about the European Patent Office and the job of European patent examiner, a role which demands a unique combination of scientific expertise, analytical thinking, language skills and an interest in intellectual property law.

Places at these events are limited but suitable candidates who are not invited to the next selection event may be considered for a subsequent one.

Also, suitable candidates in the areas of computers, telecommunications, industrial chemistry and applied physics, where we currently have numerous vacancies, may be invited for interviews at the EPO before or after the selection events.

Who can apply?

Engineers and scientists with sufficient language skills.

The job involves searching in online databases, analysing documents, communicating orally and in writing with patent applicants and their attorneys, and then taking decisions on the grant of patents valid in up to 40 European countries.
